Abstract

This is a well-printed paperback book with thin, but durable, covers, in which the story of overseas protestant Christian medical work of the past two centuries is told in broad strokes in a thoroughly readable and delightful manner. The son of a medical missionary doctor who later became a missionary physician himself in Iran and still later long-time secretary for medical work of the United Presbyterian Church, USA, Dodd brings to his task a wealth of first-hand knowledge of his subject and a distinct flair for setting it down in a clear and entertaining manner.

Although some account of the pioneer missionary efforts of the English and other European physicians who were first in the Asian field is given, the main body of the book is devoted to thumbnail accounts of a host of American physicians with great hearts, great visions, and great energy who accomplished unbelievable medical miracles under
