Abstract

Since 1964 there have been a steady stream of books considering diseases of the liver. In the surgical field monographs devoted to portal hypertension have appeared, although none have surpassed Childs.

Until the present volume appeared, no book considering the surgical aspects of liver diseases predominantly as a whole have appeared. This book is designed to fulfill this need. This book is small, extremely widely illustrated with photographs, and organized in a fashion permitting easy use. The anatomy, clinical biochemistry, and diagnostic tests of the liver are reviewed to facilitate understanding in later portions. Preoperative and postoperative care are discussed and a separate chapter is devoted to anesthesia. The clinical chapters consider hepatic trauma, abscess, tumors, resection transplantation, and portal hypertension. Each chapter reviews the pertinent clinical, physiological, and historical information, as well as the development of surgery for the specific condition.
